SABI Mind Introduces Specialized Ketamine Therapy for Chronic Pain

An advocate for Pain Awareness Month, SABI Mind educates on novel psychedelic-assisted therapies for the treatment of chronic pain conditions

CALGARY, ALBERTA [September 1, 2022]: September is Pain Awareness Month, and SABI Mind is bringing advocacy and cutting-edge therapies to the forefront for those suffering with chronic or persistent pain. On September 29, 2022, Dr. Kelly Shinkaruk, the Chronic Pain Lead & Anesthesiologist at SABI Mind, will be hosting a virtual discussion that provides further education on various ketamine-based treatment approaches to chronic pain; SABI Mind is one of the only clinics in Alberta that specializes in ketamine therapy for chronic pain.

Approximately 1 in 5 Canadians suffer from chronic pain and find conventional therapies to be largely ineffective. Various scientific studies provide significant evidence that ketamine can be safely utilized for the effective treatment in a wide range of pain conditions, including chronic pain. This clinical evidence also suggests that chronic pain management may be effective when integrated into a multidisciplinary model - an approach that SABI Mind is proud to advocate for.

SABI Mind offers an interdisciplinary program that is led by Dr. Kelly Shinkaruk, the Chronic Pain Lead & Anesthesiologist at SABI Mind. The program includes focused psychotherapy and collaboration with existing community supports for rehabilitation.

"Chronic pain affects approximately 20% of Canadians and those that continue to suffer despite maximal biopsychosocial treatment approaches may benefit from outside-the-box therapeutics,” states Dr. Kelly Shinkaruk. “While ketamine has been employed in operating rooms, emergency departments, and hospitals for decades, it is being used more frequently for both pain relief and management of mood disorders. I have been extremely fortunate to join a group of clinicians and innovators looking to expand access to this underutilized pain management modality at Sabi Mind."

To further educate audiences on ketamine therapy for chronic pain, and provide added advocacy for Pain Awareness Month, Dr. Shinkaruk will be hosting a free virtual discussion in September.
